Nirvana's Krist Novoselic, Questlove and Hole Respond to Destruction of Recordings In Universal Blaze

By Billboard

The nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards are here -- and with them come a few surprises, including one glaring snub standing out in the musical categories.

On Monday morning (Jan. 13), Issa Rae and John Cho read through the list of contenders and revealed that many of the movies that dominated the winners list of prior awards shows are up for the major music honors.

The best original song race features Elton John and Bernie Taupin's latest for the Rocketman soundtrack, "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again," as well as Frozen 2's "Into the Unknown" and Randy Newman's contribution to Toy Story 4, "I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away" -- but there was no mention of Beyoncé's Lion King track "Spirit," which was originally shortlisted in the category, and the internet was shocked, to say the least.

Another musical powerhouse was also noticeably absent from this year's list of nominees, though in an acting cateogry: Jennifer Lopez, whose performance in Hustlers was heralded by critics and garnered nominations at other prestigious awards shows, was not recognized in the best supporting actress field.

Here's the full list of music nominees for the 2020 Academy Awards:
