Noel Gallagher to Be Honored With BMI President's Award
The trophy will be handed out at this year's BMI London Awards on October 21.
Noel Gallagher will be honored with the president’s award at this year’s BMI London Awards in recognition of his influence as a songwriter, the organization has announced. The event is scheduled to be held on Oct. 21 at London’s Savoy Hotel.
“Noel Gallagher is one of the most prolific songwriters of his generation,” said BMI president and CEO Mike O’Neill, who will also be hosting the ceremony. “His originality and authenticity have inspired musicians and fans around the world, both as the songwriting genius behind Oasis and as a solo artist. We’re incredibly honored to recognize Noel’s achievements and present him with the BMI President’s Award.”
Noel and brother Liam Gallagher rocketed to stardom with the 1994 release of Oasis's Definitely Maybe, which became the fastest-selling debut album in U.K. history and eventually sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. That was followed by 1995’s even more-successful followup (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? and five more albums before the brothers officially parted ways in 2009. Noel later embarked on the solo project Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, which has released three studio albums to date.
In addition to Gallagher, this year’s BMI London Awards will also bestow pop singer-songwriter Raye with the organization’s first-ever Impact Award, awarded in recognition of “groundbreaking artistry, creative vision and impact on the future of music.” Raye has co-written for artists including Beyoncé, Charli XCX, Major Lazer, Little Mix, Khalid, Ellie Goulding and John Legend and has also released material under her own name.
The annual BMI London Awards pays tribute to the U.K. and European songwriters and publishers of the past year’s most-performed songs on U.S. radio and TV from BMI’s repertoire of nearly 15 million musical works. Trophies for "million-air" awards, song of the year and pop, film, television and cable television music will also be presented at the ceremony.
