Universal Music Appoints Ex-Sony Exec Maciej Kutak to Managing Director in Poland

By Billboard

In this week’s “You Should Know,” singer Ava Max sits down with Billboard to chat about being starstruck by Pharrell, what her music-making process is like, what inspired her hit “Sweet But Psycho,” and much more.

Max tells Billboard that she began creating music when she was 10 years old. The first place she ever performed live was at The NorVa in Virginia, where she grew up and lived until the age of 14, when she moved to California to follow her dreams.

Asked who she considers to be her biggest musical inspirations, Max names Mariah Carey, the Fugees, Gwen Stefani, Fergie, and Whitney Houston, adding that the “big vocalists” of the '80s and '90s really inspired her and helped create her sound.

If she could collaborate with any artist today, though, the singer says that she loves Cardi B and would like to work with her one day.

Max also reveals that the first time she ever felt starstruck was when she saw Pharrell at an airport when she was 11 years old, and she recalls trying not to faint, while also calling him both “incredible” and “very sweet in person.”

Speaking of her music making process, the singer shares that it is different every time, explaining, “I could probably have an idea one day and then go into the studio and really wanna write about just that idea that I have in mind. Or it can vary with just a simple beat and I just do a bunch of melodies on the track that inspire me.”

As for what inspired her hit pop track “Sweet But Psycho,” Max states that it is about a complicated relationship. “This girl's so misunderstood in this relationship," she says. "She feels like she's sweet one moment and then she feels like she's going out of her mind because of this guy, and in reality she's a strong and independent female, and I'm sure all of us ladies can relate to that.”
